Shopping & Tax Calculators

Check a restaurant tip, calculate a sale price, or work out sales tax and the final amount before you pay.

Calculate tips, sale prices, and tax

Use the original amount and the right percentage as your starting point. Check whether you need a tip total, a discounted price, a tax amount, or a final total that includes tax.

  • Calculate a tip by multiplying the bill amount by the tip percentage written as a decimal. Add the tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people when splitting evenly.
  • Calculate a discount by multiplying the original price by the discount rate, then subtracting the savings from the original price.
  • For this site’s discount workflow, the entered sales-tax rate is applied to the discounted price. Actual tax treatment can depend on local rules and the item being purchased.
  • To add sales tax, multiply the pre-tax price by the tax rate as a decimal. To reverse a tax-inclusive total, divide the total by one plus the tax rate as a decimal.

Example: apply a discount and sales tax

A $100 item with 20% off becomes $80 before tax. With an entered tax rate of 8%, tax is $6.40 and the final price is $86.40. The example is illustrative; use the rate that applies to your purchase.
