Plan common home projects with quick area and material estimates for paint and flooring.
Estimate paint and flooring materials
Measure carefully before buying supplies. Results are planning estimates, so check product coverage, package sizes, room layout, and the amount of waste you expect on the job.
- For a rectangular floor, multiply room length by room width to estimate area. Measure irregular spaces in smaller rectangles and add the areas together.
- Add a waste allowance to the flooring area to account for cuts, pattern matching, and damaged pieces. Follow the flooring manufacturer’s guidance for your product and layout.
- For paint, estimate the surfaces to be covered, account for doors and windows where supported, and multiply by the number of coats you plan to apply.
- Compare the result with the coverage stated on the paint can or flooring package. Surface texture, application method, tile pattern, and room geometry can change the quantity required.
Example: estimate floor area
A rectangular room that is 12 feet long and 10 feet wide has 120 square feet of floor area before adding a waste allowance. If you plan for 10% extra, budget for about 132 square feet of material.
