Laminate, vinyl, and sheet vinyl are often among the most affordable flooring options. The final cost also depends on underlayment, installation, subfloor preparation, and waste.

Waste is required because boards and tiles must be cut to fit the edges of your room. Cutting inevitably leaves unusable pieces.

Generally, 10% is standard for simple square or rectangular rooms. For rooms with many angles, bay windows, or if you are installing patterns (like herringbone), 15% or more is recommended.

Break the irregular room down into standard rectangles, calculate the area of each separately, and add them together to get the total area.
